Hungary is an old ally of the US, but it vilifies the US and treats Washington as an “enemy”.
The US Ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, on Thursday, March 14, warned Budapest against the dangers of close cooperation with the Russian regime, Radio Liberty reports.
Pressman noted that Hungary is a longtime ally, but it is doing things that undermine Budapest’s credibility, and that these concerns are shared by Hungary’s NATO allies and “cannot be ignored.”
The concern centers on a government that “brandishes and treats the United States as an ‘enemy’ while making policy decisions that further alienate it from friends and allies,” he said.
The ambassador emphasized that the United States “cannot ignore the speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, who says that Putin’s war in Ukraine is in fact “led by the United States.”
“We do not understand or agree that the Prime Minister referred to the United States as Hungary’s “main enemy,” the ambassador explained.
He noted that the allies have warned Hungary about the dangers of close relations with Moscow, but if this is a political decision by the Hungarian authorities, then “we must decide how best to protect our interests in matter of security.”
The ambassador also recalled that Budapest has repeatedly called on the United States and other allies to stop helping Ukraine defend itself from Russian aggressors.
“The United States also wants peace. We want this war to end. But Hungary’s proposal does not correspond to reality,” the diplomat said.
According to Pressman, the United States wants to improve relations with Hungary, but Budapest has not yet agreed to this.
As you know, on March 8, the Hungarian Prime Minister met with the former US President in the US state of Florida. Trump praised Orbán as a “fantastic leader” during the meeting, and Orbán said Hungary “needs peace” and “his name” is Trump. Biden later criticized Trump for meeting with Orban, and the Hungarian Foreign Ministry summoned the US ambassador over Biden’s words.
