The head of state believes that negotiations on the full membership of Ukraine should begin in the first half of this year.
President Vladimir Zelensky said that on Wednesday, March 13, he held several meetings on international affairs regarding Ukraine’s next steps towards membership in the European Union. Zelensky spoke about this in his evening address.
“I held several meetings on our international work. The first was the European Union. The next steps towards full membership. Yesterday the European Commission approved the negotiation framework. Next, we await the decision of European leaders in approval,” Zelensky said.
“And it will be important for Ukraine and for the entire European community – an important and strong signal – to do everything to start negotiations already during the Belgian presidency in the first half of this year,” Zelensky emphasized.
He emphasized that this should be the common speed of both Ukraine and the European Union. Zelensky added that Ukraine has a clear sequence of steps.
The president also spoke about a strategic meeting on the direction of American policy.
“About how to give more correct impulses to our work with partners and joint pressure on the Russian state throughout this year. Winning here, in Ukraine, in this confrontation with Russian terrorism is a matter of safety for democratic systems, it’s basically a matter of what democracies are capable of,” Zelensky emphasized.
He emphasized that with sufficient support, Ukraine will be able to defend itself, which means ensuring that “no other international criminal will be tempted by aggression like Putin.”
Earlier it was reported that the European Commission presented a draft negotiation framework for Ukraine.
Let’s remember that in December 2023, the leaders of the European Union decided to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on joining the EU.
