On Wednesday, March 13, MEPs approved the extension of trade liberalization for Moldova for another year until June 5, 2025. They also amended Ukraine’s proposal to strengthen guarantees for EU farmers. This was reported on the official website of the European Parliament.
It is noted that 347 parliamentarians voted in favor. 117 deputies opposed, and 99 abstained. This was the vote to amend the European Commission’s proposal to suspend import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural exports to the EU.
Deputies returned the report to the International Trade Committee in order to begin negotiations with the Council of the European Union.
However, European legislation gives the European Commission the power to take any necessary measures if there are significant disruptions in the EU market or in the markets of one or more EU countries due to a surge in imports of products from Ukraine.
Let us recall that the last time the European Parliament voted positively for the extension of duty-free trade with Ukraine for another year to support the country’s economy in war conditions was in May 2023.
