The Hungarian ministry responded to the American president’s statement three days later and called it a “serious insult.”
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry has summoned the US ambassador over President Joe Biden’s accusations against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban that he has a low opinion of democracy and is “seeking a dictatorship.” This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó in a comment on ATV published on Tuesday, March 12.
The statement of the American leader was made against the background of the head of the Hungarian government traveling to Florida for a meeting with the former president and rival of Biden, Donald Trump.
Szijjártó said that the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Levente Madyar received American Ambassador David Pressman and asked to see a quote in which Orban said what Biden attributed to him.
“Obviously, nothing of that kind was said, so we did not receive a significant response to it,” assured the Hungarian official.
According to him, Biden’s words are “the official position of America” and it allegedly “complicates bilateral relations a lot because it did not damage the government, but the country, because the prime minister and the government does not run the country by random lottery, but by the chosen people.”
The Foreign Minister boasts that the current ruling party in Hungary has won four consecutive elections. According to him, this means that Hungarians have determined the direction of the government, which is one of the important characteristics of democracy.
Szijjarto called Biden’s comments about Orban “a very serious insult.”
As you know, on March 8, the Hungarian Prime Minister met with the former US President in the US state of Florida. Trump praised Orbán as a “fantastic leader” during the meeting, and Orbán said Hungary “needs peace” and “his name” is Trump.
