The dark cloud of smoke was visible for several kilometers, the Berliner Zeitung reports. The fire occurred in a tent city, which was set up on the territory of the former Berlin Tegel Airport. One of the tents, covering an area of 1,000 square meters, burned completely and eventually collapsed.
According to a representative of the State Administration for Refugees, no one was injured. Everyone was able to leave their home on time. Rescuers examined nine people. Three of them suffered minor smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization.
The media noted that living conditions in the tent city in Tegel were “dramatic.” The refugees were housed in huge halls with narrow beds, with five bunk beds in each sector. Instead of a door there are curtains. Residents complained that there were rats and mice in the tents. However, some refugees have remained in this center for more than a year and a half.
