The United States is preparing a new weapons package for Ukraine, which may include ATACMS missiles, media reports.
The United States of America is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine, which could reach $400 million. Two officials with knowledge told Reuters about it. An official announcement is expected to be released this evening and assistance will be provided as soon as possible.
Note that this is Washington’s first move in months, as additional funds for Kyiv remain blocked by Republican leaders in Congress.
Where does the money come from?
The agency, citing officials, states that this package was financed through loans returned to the Pentagon for the recent purchase of weapons for Ukraine.
The use of returned US Army funds therefore opens a narrow window to immediately allow more aid to be sent to Kyiv from existing stockpiles while the Biden administration waits for additional funding to be passed by US lawmakers .
In addition, the media said that at today’s meeting, the heads of the US intelligence services demanded that members of the House of Representatives immediately approve additional military aid to Ukraine, saying that “it will not only support the Kyiv in the fight against Russia, but will also deter Chinese aggression.”
“This has implications for American interests that are directly related to our interests in the Indo-Pacific region. Such an outcome will fuel the ambitions of the Chinese leadership, and they will undermine the trust of our partners and ally in the Indo-Pacific region to our reliability,” said CIA Director William.
ATACMS decision
The Reuters information was later confirmed by Politico. The publication says the aid will include “several” APAM missiles – an older version of the ATACMS that has a range of about 160 km and contains hundreds of cluster bombs.
It is also reported that the package will include additional shells for the 155 mm howitzer and a multiple launch rocket system.
Politico said that while “Ukrainians will welcome the new weapons, this package is only a temporary solution.”
Package from Denmark
In addition, today Denmark announced the allocation of military aid to Ukraine. According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, the total cost of the package is about $337 million.
The new round of Danish aid to Kyiv, in particular, includes Caesar artillery systems and ammunition.
Sky News added that official Copenhagen strongly supports Ukraine and has pledged to provide significant military aid to the country since the start of the war.
President Vladimir Zelensky has already thanked Denmark for this decision.
“I am grateful to the Prime Minister of Denmark Matta Frederiksen, the government and people of Denmark for today’s announcement of the next package of military aid to Ukraine. This is one of the important results of the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Ukraine and a example of the implementation of our common agreements. Artillery, mortars and ammunition will significantly strengthen the defense forces at a critical time. We appreciate all 16 defense support packages worth almost $5 billion,” wrote Zelensky.
At the time of publication of the story, White House spokesman Jake Sullivan officially announced the allocation of a new aid package of $300 million to Ukraine. The aid includes artillery shells and GMLRS missiles for HIMARS. This is the first military aid package to Kyiv from Washington since December last year.
