Now the formation of a ruling coalition will take place around the winners of the election – the Democratic Alliance.
The leader of the Portuguese center-right Democratic Alliance (AD), Luis Montenegro, declared victory in the parliamentary elections that took place on Sunday, DW reports.
The politician now expects Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to formally invite AD to form a government. However, the official results, almost ready on Monday morning, showed that AD still did not have a majority.
The center-left Socialist Party (PS), which has been in power since 2015, admitted and its leader Pedro Nuno Santos congratulated AD on his victory.
Exit polls showed the far-right party Chega (Enough) made significant gains, with its leader saying the party was “ready to form a government.”
Almost complete official results showed that the Democratic Alliance won 29.49% of the vote in Sunday’s election, ahead of the Socialists who received 28.66% of the vote.
Since none of the listed parties claim a solid majority, it now comes down to building a ruling coalition around the winners of the election – the Democratic Alliance.
Earlier, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that the fate of the world is being decided in Ukraine. He assured that his country will continue to provide Ukraine with comprehensive support at all levels.
