Eight children and an adult have died after eating sea turtle meat on the island of Pemba, part of the Zanzibar archipelago in Tanzania. The Associated Press reported this on Sunday, March 10.
It was indicated that 78 other people were hospitalized due to poisoning. And the adult who died on Friday was the mother of one of the children who died earlier. They all ate turtle meat on Tuesday.
Zanzibar authorities sent specialists to the island, who, among other things, warned people about the dangers of eating such meat. Turtles are a rare species and their protection is regulated by international agreements.
Despite this, in some regions of the world, such as in Tanzania, sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy. Its use periodically ends in the death of people. The cause is a rare type of food poisoning called chelonitoxicity (chelonitoxication). There is no cure, and in case of poisoning, only supportive therapy is possible.
In November 2021, seven people, including a three-year-old child, died on the island of Pemba after eating turtle meat. Three others were taken to the hospital.
Earlier in Turkey, a sea turtle attacked a tourist from Russia. Doctors found bruises and bites on the woman’s body.
