The United States believes that the loss of Kherson by the end of 2022 could provoke the Russian Federation into a nuclear strike on Ukraine.

At the end of 2022, the United States of America began “thorough preparations” for a possible Russian nuclear strike on the territory of Ukraine. CNN reported this referring to two senior officials of the Joe Biden administration.
One of them said that the concerns of the administration are not just hypothetical – it is based on some information received. The US National Security Council convened a series of meetings to introduce contingency plans.
The release of Kherson at the end of 2022 could be a “potential trigger” for the use of Russian nuclear weapons, according to the official, considering their use in the event of an “existing threat to the state of Russia.”
The Biden administration has suggested that Russia could launch a tactical nuclear strike to contain further losses of territories under its control in Ukraine, as well as to prevent any potential attack on the Russian Federation itself. At the same time, Russian propaganda spread a fake story about a Ukrainian “dirty bomb”.
Subsequently, Western intelligence received information that the possibility of a nuclear strike was openly discussed in Russia. As one official put it, it was “discussed at the lower levels of the Russian system.” However, the United States has never seen any signs that Russia is taking steps to mobilize its nuclear forces.
The United States also worked closely with its allies not only to develop plans for a nuclear attack on Russia, but also to communicate warnings to the Russian side about the consequences of such a strike.
For now, American and European officials believe the risk has subsided.
Let’s remember that on February 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his speech to the Federal Assembly, threatened “tragic consequences” for countries that decided to send their military to Ukraine.
The EU commented on Putin’s statements, noting that nuclear threats are completely unacceptable and inappropriate. And the United States recalled that they had already warned Russia about the consequences of using nuclear weapons.
