Putin’s godfather wants to restore his citizenship through the court, regain his mandate as the representative of the people and lift the sanctions imposed against him by the National Security and Defense Council.
The former people’s deputy from the banned OPZZh party, Viktor Medvedchuk, who was accused in Ukraine of high treason, is trying through the court to recover his Ukrainian passport and remove NSDC sanctions. This is stated in an investigation by hromadske, published on Tuesday, March 5.
According to journalists, a month after Medvedchuk was stripped of Ukrainian citizenship, and soon after his mandate, he appealed to the Supreme Court.
In the lawsuit, Medvedchuk demanded that his passport be returned not only to him, but also to other renegade representatives and argued that the order of President Vladimir Zelensky was “adopted in violation of the norms of the Constitution.”
In addition, it is reported that Medvedchuk wants to regain his mandate and remove the sanctions imposed against him by the National Security and Defense Council. His lawyers filed lawsuits on these issues.
Consideration of the claim for the return of Medvedchuk’s deputy mandate, which he filed in February 2023, has been temporarily suspended. In the case of the lifting of sanctions, the hearings continued from December 2022.
The authors of the publication recalled that Medvedchuk tried to renew his lawyer’s license through the court, but in February 2024 the court rejected him.
According to constitutional law expert Bogdan Bondarenko, with whom journalists spoke, the same fate awaits Medvedchuk’s other lawsuits.
“I assume that with economic sanctions they will definitely fly. I think they will fly with everything. Therefore, I doubt that today there can be a decision like: “Let’s return Medvedchuk’s citizenship, remove the sanctions economic and give a mandate.” the judges are unlikely to agree with it, but they can really drag the matter,” added the specialist.
As you know, in January 2023, President Vladimir Zelensky deprived Medvedchuk of citizenship. The representative of the former citizen is suspected of treason. In May 2021, he was indicted on three counts: theft of state mineral resources, transfer of secret military information and subversive activities.
In April 2022, the godfather of the Russian president was detained by law enforcement officials. In September of the same year, he was handed over to Russia as part of a large-scale prisoner exchange.
