Thierry Breton proposed new approaches to the defense-industrial complex (DIC) of the European Union.
The European Commission is offering the EU all kinds of ways to stimulate its own defense industry to move into a “war economy mode” in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It was reported by Reuters.
The European Commissioner for Industry, Thierry Breton, suggested increasing the purchase of weapons from European companies and helping them increase production capacity.
According to him, Europe must do more to protect itself, given the possibility that Donald Trump may be elected for another term of the presidency in the United States.
EU officials want to see a greater role for EU bodies in defense industrial policy.
The war showed that European industry was not prepared for some major challenges, such as a sudden increase in demand for large amounts of artillery ammunition, Western analysts said.
Breton proposes to create a European version of the US Foreign Military Sales Scheme, where the US helps other governments buy weapons from US companies.
These proposals must be approved by all the national governments of the 27 EU member states and the European Parliament in order to implement them. The proposals will also be studied by NATO.
Let’s recall that President Vladimir Zelensky said that the total capacity of Ukraine and the EU will eventually exceed the production of weapons in Russia.
