An Air Force squadron of the German Armed Forces has taken command at the Latvian airbase of Lielvardi, from where German pilots will take over air patrols of the Baltic countries for the first time.
Until the end of November, up to six Eurofighter aircraft and about 200 soldiers will be based at the military air base, located 60 km southeast of Riga.
NATO air policing is of great importance for the safety of residents of Latvia and the Baltic countries, said Ingo Gerhartz, Inspector General of the German Air Force.
He also noted the importance of collective defense in countries bordering Russia.
Germany has been and remains a reliable friend and partner of all the Baltic countries. And the Air Force stands firmly on the side of Latvia and the entire Baltic region, he emphasized.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania do not have their own fighter jets, and since 2004 NATO allies have taken turns securing the Baltic airspace.
