The former US president also won the Missouri and Idaho caucuses on Saturday, according to Edison Research.
Caucus is a meeting of party supporters and members. Unlike the primaries held by state governments before the US presidential election, caucuses are organized by the party apparatus. The voting of the presidential candidate at the congress (which will be held in the summer) depends on their results.
In all three states, Trump crushed Nikki Haley, his last remaining rival for the Republican presidential nomination, moving closer to becoming the nominee, Reuters states.
In Michigan, Trump led Haley in all 13 counties in the nominating caucuses, according to the state Republican Party. He won with almost 98% support (1 thousand 575 votes against just 36 for Haley).
Haley is running out of time to change the course of the race for the Republican nomination. “Super Tuesday” on March 5 is the most important day of the primaries, when 15 states will vote, reminds Reuters.
With wins in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, the US Virgin Islands, South Carolina and now Michigan, Missouri and Idaho, Trump has emerged as the clear front-runner in the race, and Haley is holding on thanks to support from donors interested in an alternative.
Former US President Donald Trump would lead incumbent President Joe Biden by five percentage points if the 2024 presidential election were held today. This is evidenced by a survey by The New York Times and Siena College.
48% of voters said they would vote for the former president; 43%, when asked the same question, said they would vote for Biden.
The poll also found that 65% of voters surveyed believe the United States is heading in the wrong direction, while 24% believe the country is on the right track.
