On Friday, March 1, German Eurofighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft for the first time near Latvia. The Latvian Air Force reported this on Facebook.
German planes flew from the Latvian military base of Lielvarde to intercept Russian aircraft near Latvian territorial waters.
This is the first time that German Eurofighters from a Latvian military base went on such a mission.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds reacted to X (formerly Twitter) about the incident.
“NATO air patrols are fully operational and the allies can respond immediately. Today, for the first time, German Eurofighters flew from the air base to intercept two Russian military aircraft near Latvian territory that water,” the official wrote.
As we already wrote, a French Mirage 2000-5 fighter intercepted two Russian Su-30M in the Baltic Sea on Thursday, February 29, and then an An-72.
Even earlier, one of the “shahed” launched by Russia on the night of December 14, 2023 in Ukraine violated NATO airspace, falling on the territory of Romania. Germany alerted Eurofighters.
