There are two more steps before ratification: approval by the full Senate and the Governor General’s signature.
The bill on the ratification of the updated Free Trade Agreement between Canada and Ukraine passed the relevant committee of the Senate of Canada without any changes. Ukrinform reported this on Saturday, March 2.
It is understood that the bill will be returned for final approval by the full Senate next week’s plenary, which begins on March 19. Since the bill underwent the same three-step journey through the House of Commons, it will only need receive the signature of the Governor-General to take effect after final approval by the Senate.
The original Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement took effect on August 1, 2017 and allowed for the mutual elimination or reduction of import duties on most products. Last September, during a visit to Ottawa, President Vladimir Zelensky, together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, signed an updated Agreement, which now also covers trade in services, and not only in goods, investment , telecommunications and other promising areas.
As reported, in early February, the Canadian House of Commons approved an updated free trade agreement with Ukraine.
We remind you that last week Ukraine signed a security agreement with Canada. The document provides for Canada’s allocation of more than 3 billion Canadian dollars of macro-financial and defense assistance to Ukraine by 2024.
