The closing of checkpoints aims to solve problems of national security, smuggling, and violation of international sanctions.
From March 1, the movement of pedestrians and cyclists at the border checkpoints in Medininkai and Šalcininkai will also be suspended, and the boarding and disembarking of passengers at the Käna and Kybartai railway border checkpoints will be prohibited, except for special case, the decision of which will be made by the State Border Guard Service.
It was also decided to limit by 50 percent the number of permits issued to Belarusian and Lithuanian carriers engaged in regular international passenger transportation by bus.
According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, last year citizens crossing the vehicle border checkpoints at the state border with Belarus were checked almost 3.9 million times – this is more than a quarter more than in 2022. Two- a third of the people surveyed were citizens of Belarus.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania will examine 18 thousand Belarusians who did not fill out a special questionnaire.
We remind you that the decision to close two checkpoints on the border of Belarus – Raigardas and Lavorishkes – was made on February 21.
