NATO allies have provided unprecedented aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia since 2014.
NATO countries should consider all options to help Kyiv, including sending Alliance troops to Ukraine. This was announced on Tuesday by the head of the General Staff of the Netherlands Army, General Onno Eichelsheim, NL Times reports.
“I think you should keep all options open to see how you can better support Ukraine,” he said.
Eichelsheim noted that Ukraine has not asked the Netherlands to send troops and there is no point in discussing it yet.
According to him, if the Western military comes to Ukraine, they will have to act as part of a coalition. The head of the Dutch General Staff added that this could happen “through NATO or through an alliance of 10-15 countries.”
“It would be very unusual if one or two countries did it,” he said.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that there are currently no plans to station European troops on Ukrainian territory.
The Czech Republic, Poland, Spain and Italy have said they are not considering sending troops to Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also rejected the idea of sending NATO and EU troops to Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the appearance of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine would lead to a direct conflict between the Alliance and Russia.
