I think the consequences of (Congressional) inaction in Ukraine are becoming horrendous on a daily basis. I spoke with some of our G7 partners, they are very concerned,” said US President Joe Biden.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, after a meeting with the president, said that he continues to consider resolving the issue of protecting the border a priority.
Johnson also mentioned considering the issue of assistance for Ukraine.
I made it clear to the President and others present that the House is actively exploring all possible options. And we will take up this issue in a timely manner. But again, the first priority for our country is the border and its security,” the speaker said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, is under pressure to vote for a relief package that includes $60 billion for Ukraine. The package was previously approved by the US Senate, but Johnson refused to bring it to a vote because it did not include tighter controls over the US southern border, which Republicans are seeking.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer pressed Johnson to follow through on his Ukraine aid commitments, saying Democrats have a strong plan for border security.
He said participants in the meeting with Biden discussed how failure to support Ukraine could split NATO and push allies away from America.
Late last week, Schumer led a congressional delegation to Ukraine and said the trip left him “stunned” because Ukrainians were “fighting unarmed against a brutal dictator.”
The United States has not made a final decision to provide Ukraine with $60 billion. help.
The House of Representatives adjourned until February 28, after which the budget process will begin, and only then, no earlier than the first week of March, can congressmen return to the issue of aid to Ukraine.
