For the United States, the priority is to solve the issue of border protection, said the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, said he continues to consider resolving the border protection issue a priority. The politician announced this after a meeting with other congressional leaders and President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday, February 27.
“We have to take care of America’s needs first. And first of all, our open border,” he stressed.
Another priority called by Johnson is continued funding for the federal government to avoid a shutdown.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives also mentioned the consideration of an additional funding bill containing aid for Ukraine.
“I made it clear to the President and others present that the House of Representatives is actively exploring all possible options. And we will discuss this issue in a timely manner. But again, the first priority for our country is the border and its security,” Johnson said.
Let’s recall that on February 13, the US Senate supported a package that provides more than $60 billion for Ukraine, mainly for military aid. But the Senate’s decision to appropriate the money is not enough – the bill must be passed by the House of Representatives.
On February 15, the Speaker of the House of Representatives ended the work week early and announced a nearly two-week recess without considering a bill to aid allies. The issue could now come before Congress in mid-March.
