Analysts suggest that the ruling regime in the Russian Federation is trying to maintain the social apathy of pre-war Russians.
State officials and media in Russia avoided covering the second anniversary of the start of a full-scale war against Ukraine, so as not to draw public attention to the failures of the occupying army. In particular, we are talking about the significant losses of the Russian Federation, failure to achieve the stated strategic goals, and the implementation of smaller tasks – the capture of the entire regions of Lugansk and Donetsk. This is reported in the ISW report.
The latest poll of Russian public opinion showed that Russian sentiment about the war in Ukraine remains unchanged, with the majority of Russians mostly indifferent to the war but not supporting a second wave of mobilization.
Analysts suggest that the ruling regime of the Russian Federation decided to remain silent about the second anniversary in order to preserve pre-war public apathy and continue the war without significant public reaction.
ISW added that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is aware that the second wave of mobilization will be unpopular and worries that it will lead to widespread discontent. However, this may change after his re-election in March 2024.
As you know, February 24, 2024 is the second anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to occupy our entire state in a short period of time. But the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people prevented these plans. The Ukrainians managed to liberate a significant part of the territory occupied in the first months. Now the heavy positional battle continues at the front.
In two years, the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed more than 400 thousand Russian aggressors. On the day of February 23, approximately 800 Russians were killed.
