Her goal is to again try to convince congressmen to provide assistance to Ukraine and other allies and prevent a shutdown.
Bloomberg reports this with reference to a statement from the White House.
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office confirmed he will be at the meeting. Also attending will be Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The meeting will take place ahead of the return of the House of Representatives to work on February 28. In addition, the US budget is on the agenda in Congress, because the temporary schedule expires on March 1. Financing of part of the state apparatus ends on March 1-8.
Senate Democratic leader Schumer said on the eve of the meeting that agreements on both issues had not yet been reached due to the position of the right wing of Republicans in the House of Representatives, but expressed hope that Speaker Johnson would still bring the bills to a vote.
The White House wants the House of Representatives to approve the bill passed by the Senate. Bloomberg notes that this could cost Johnson his job.
At the same time, a number of American media outlets write that pressure on Johnson is growing, since neither the majority of his party members who support aid to Ukraine, nor Trump supporters who do not like that the speaker is negotiating with the Democrats, are dissatisfied with his position.
