In Kyiv today, February 25, a farewell ceremony was held for the Hero of Ukraine, dissident, political prisoner, people’s deputy of the 1st, 2nd and 4th convocations of the Ukrainian parliament Stepan Khmara.

The ceremony took place at the Kyiv Conservatory, reports the Ukrinform agency.
His relatives and friends, political figures, representatives of the public and the media came to say goodbye to one of the founding parents of Independent Ukraine.
At 13:30 the dissident’s funeral will take place in the Church of St. Nicholas of the UGCC at Askold’s Grave. He will be buried at 15.00 at the Baikovo cemetery.
Stepan Khmara died on February 21 at the age of 86. Recently he was seriously ill, but continued to be active in public life.
He was born in 1937 in the village of Bobyatin, Sokal district, Lviv region. In 1980, the communists sentenced him to seven years in political prison camps in the Urals and five years of exile for “Ukrainian nationalist activities.”
In 1987, he returned to Ukraine, and the following year he became one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union.
Cloud supported the 1990 Granite Revolution, was a participant in the 2004 Orange Revolution, and in 2015 went on a hunger strike in support of political prisoners. He is also a co-author of the Constitution of Ukraine.
In 2006, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.
