This was announced on February 22 at the White House during a telephone briefing by US National Security Council coordinator John Kirby.
We have already provided Ukraine with a version of ATACMS missiles known as APAMS, and they have used them to good effect,” the White House spokesman said.
Kirby emphasized that equipping the Ukrainian Armed Forces with ATACMS versions with an increased engagement range has never been taken off the table.
This is still an integral part of the discussions we have with the Ukrainian side. Ukraine really has such capabilities, and other countries have provided it with similar long-range weapons. So we are still in discussions with the Ukrainians regarding a longer-range version of ATACMS,” the White House spokesman said.
Earlier, NBC reported that the Biden administration may ask its allies to transfer ATACMS missiles with a range of more than 300 km to Ukraine.
On February 22, the Ukrainian military showed launches of ATACMS ballistic missiles at Russian targets. The corresponding video was released by the Department of Strategic Communications of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Most likely, the published launches were made in the autumn, namely in October 2023, when Ukrainian artillerymen inflicted fire on Russian airfields and air defense positions.
Let us recall that the first official use of ATACMS during the Russian-Ukrainian war took place on October 17 during Operation Dragonfly of the Special Operations Forces.
