Transnistria’s self-proclaimed authorities are preparing an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Transnistria, the separatist region of Moldova that borders Ukraine, has always been considered a potential problem for us. And now from the potential it can become real. On February 28, the self-proclaimed authorities of Transnistria are preparing a “congress of representatives of all levels” – the so-called parliament of Transnistria, as well as district, city, town and village councils, where they are preparing an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Traditional script
Last Friday, the people of Transnistria allegedly approached the head of the region Vadim Krasnoselsky with the idea of holding a general congress, on Monday he supported it, and on Wednesday the “parliament” of Transnistria announced that the meeting will take place on February 28.
The place, participants, and time of the event have been determined, but the decision where the representatives are gathered has not been announced. At the same time, the leading Pridnestrovian politicians did not hide the fact that Russia would be discussed at the congress.
The regional leadership is said to be dissatisfied with the latest decisions of the Moldovan government in the economic field.
The head of the Transnistrian parliament, Alexander Korshunov, undertook to prove to the media that the congress will appeal to the whole world, and not only to Russia.
“The situation is complicated, and we need to contact all structures, including European ones,” he said, without, however, revealing the essence of the appeal.
At the same time, the representative of the “Supreme Council of Transnistria” Vadim Kravchuk admitted to the Tiraspol TV channel TSV that the purpose of the congress was to confirm that Tiraspol still wants to join the Russian Federation.
“There is no point in holding another referendum, but confirming the previous decision is appropriate… In 2006, Pridnestrovie defined the vector (of unification) with Russia, along with the Eurasian Union. The Congress of Deputies of all of level is likely to confirm our intentions,” explained He.
One of the few representatives of the Transnistrian opposition, Gennady Chorba, spoke more directly, drawing attention to the opportunity: the congress, where an appeal to Russia will be expressed in one form or another, is immediately schedule for February 28. And on February 29, Russian President Putin is scheduled to address the Russian Parliament.
Chorba concluded that the congress “must express, on behalf of the citizens living on the left bank of the Dniester, a request to accept Transnistria into the Russian Federation, and on February 29, Putin will announce it in his address, and the Federal Assembly will quickly decide to respond to this request.” .
Following the results of the 2006 referendum, the Transnistrian Central Election Commission announced that more than 97% of Transnistria’s residents supported Transnistria’s future accession to Russia. And also – they voted for maintaining “independence” until joining the Russian Federation took place. Local representatives are still appealing these “results”.
The most radical choice
After Transnistria’s appeal, in response – in the most radical scenario – Russia could announce the annexation of this Moldovan region.
However, in Moldova this option is considered unrealistic, as such a move would hit Transnistria itself and Moscow’s influence in the region. However, we should not forget that the presence of logic in international decisions is not a strong point of the Kremlin. So this scenario definitely cannot be ruled out.
Second front?
As a rule, in the context of Transnistria – Ukraine – Russia, they often talk about “opening a second front with Ukraine” from the Transnistrian territory in case of annexation, this is also out of the question – there are no military capabilities about this. territory, and a counterattack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces would lead to the almost lightning-quick defeat of Tiraspol.
Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence says that, according to its data, representatives of unrecognized Transnistria at the congress next week do not plan to appeal to Vladimir Putin about joining Russia, said GRU representative Andrey Yusov.
“According to our data, the information that on February 28 the “authorities” of Transnistria will allegedly ask the Russian Federation to include them in its composition has not been confirmed,” said Yusov.
According to the source of Ukrainskaya Pravda, the information that is now widely discussed in the media is part of the internal political process in Moldova, as well as some pressure from the unrecognized Transnistria to protect economic interests.
