The nomination of Klaus Iohannis will complicate efforts by other allies to nominate Mark Rutte as the next NATO secretary general.
Romania intends to nominate its President Klaus Iohanis for the position of Secretary-General of the Alliance. The country has already informed NATO members about it, Bloomberg reports.
It was noted that the nomination of President Klaus Iohannis will complicate the efforts of other allies to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Unnamed European and American officials said they doubted Iohanis’ chances. Some say the Romanian attempt is likely to only delay the process before Rutte eventually becomes secretary general.
Earlier, the media reported that US President Joe Biden supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of the next NATO Secretary General.
We remind you that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is the main contender for the post of NATO leader when Jens Stoltenberg steps down next year.
