Under international law, Ukraine can launch F-16 strikes against military targets in the Russian Federation.
In accordance with international law, Ukraine can conduct strikes with F-16s on military targets on Russian territory, but this issue will be decided by the countries that provide aircraft to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this on Wednesday, February 21, Voice of America wrote.
Stoltenberg added that “different allies have slightly different policies on this issue.”
“But in general… this is Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine in gross violation of international law. And according to international law, Ukraine has the right to self-defense. And that includes striking of legitimate military targets – Russian military targets outside Ukraine. This is international law.” , – stressed the NATO Secretary General.
Speaking about sending fighters to Ukraine, Stoltenberg stressed that the allies will listen to experts to determine the readiness of the F-16 for deployment.
“It’s impossible to say exactly when, because it’s a dilemma. We all want the F-16s to be there as soon as possible. That being said, of course, the impact of the F-16s will be stronger and better if more trained. and prepared the pilots. And not only them, but also the maintenance, the personnel and all the support systems that need to be put in place,” said Stoltenberg.
The first group of Ukrainian pilots, consisting of four people, will complete the F-16 aircraft training program in the summer of 2024.
We remind you that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte named the minimum number of F-16 for Ukraine. In total, his country has 42 such aircraft in service.
Denmark will also provide 19 fighter aircraft. The transfer of F-16s was also announced by Norway, which has about 60 aircraft.
