Congress representatives must fulfill their constitutional obligations and help protect Ukraine’s freedom and independence, the adviser urged.
Delays in US aid have left Ukraine running out of weapons, forcing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to withdraw from Avdiivka and giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a chance to win a “remarkable victory” in the field of war. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said this on Tuesday, February 20, Voice of America reports.
He called on Congress to pass the bill for additional funding for aid to allies, which the Senate approved more than a week ago.
“Ukrainian troops have been forced to withdraw from a city in eastern Ukraine where they have been fighting Russia for months. This is largely because Ukraine is running out of weapons due to inaction by Congress,” said by a White House spokesman.
Sullivan noted that each day’s delay in Congress harms US national security interests.
“There’s no other way to do it — and so I think Congress, and especially the Speaker, must face up to its responsibility and then live up to that responsibility, live up to that promise to its constituents and to the American people and to American national security.” – said Sullivan.
Referring to historical events, he said that if dictators are not stopped, they will continue to advance.
“The cost to America is growing, and the consequences are becoming more serious for our NATO allies and other countries,” Sullivan said.
He added that the money to be sent to Ukraine is not a debt obligation, but aid.
“Asking Ukraine to take on a huge amount of debt now, when it is fighting for its life, we do not believe that is the best way forward. We believe that the package that we have built and the senators, both Democrats and Democrats, voted for and Republicans last week was the right package,” Sullivan said.
We remind you that on February 13, the US Senate supported a package that provides more than $60 billion for Ukraine – mainly for military aid. The Senate’s decision is not enough to appropriate the money – the bill must be passed by the House of Representatives.
Speaker Mike Johnson ended the House work week early and announced a nearly two-week recess without considering the Ukraine aid bill.
