The head of state made this statement in an interview with the Serbian television and radio company Prva on February 18.
The teacher said that he was “horrified” by the news of the death of Navalny, who criticized the regime of Russian President Putin. Currently, Serbia’s attitude towards Russia should be considered in the context of the development of the situation in Ukraine and the results of the presidential elections in the United States, Vucic added.
The German agency dpa wrote that this was the first time the Serbian president spoke publicly on the issue of Navalny’s death.
Serbia has not yet joined the EU sanctions against Russia, Vucic added. Despite Russia’s war, Vucic has still maintained good relations with the Kremlin and is moving his country closer to joining the EU.
Vucic also responded to criticism of his reaction to a recent speech at the Munich security conference by Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya. Then the Serbian president stood up after Navalnaya’s speech, but did not applaud. The teacher explained this behavior by saying that he allegedly did not know who was speaking, because he could not read Navalnaya’s badge.
In Russia, on February 16, Navalny was reported dead in correctional colony No. 3 “Polar Wolf” in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where he was transferred while serving a long-term prison sentence. The next day, the oppositionist’s lawyer confirmed the information about his death.
