American senators are now preparing a bipartisan resolution condemning official Budapest’s retreat from democracy.

US senators will introduce a bipartisan resolution in Congress condemning Hungary’s abandonment of democracy. They are also calling on Budapest to lift its block on Sweden’s entry into NATO. The AP reported it.

Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Thom Tillis are preparing to introduce a bipartisan resolution condemning the democratic apostasy in Hungary.

The senators noted the “important role that Hungary can play in European and transatlantic security” but pointed out that it had failed to fulfill its earlier promises not to be the last NATO member to ratify Sweden’s membership in the alliance.

“Hungary did not join all other member countries in approving Sweden’s entry into NATO… and put transatlantic security at risk at a crucial moment for peace and stability in Europe,” the document said. .

The resolution also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for interfering in Hungarian media, restricting civil liberties and attempting to suppress dissent.

Note that Sweden applied to join NATO in 2022. The only countries that have delayed ratification of membership are Türkiye and Hungary. However, the Turkish parliament approved Sweden’s entry into the Alliance.

As is known, the Hungarian opposition proposed to hold an extraordinary meeting of the parliament to approve Sweden’s application, but the ruling party staged a boycott.

We remind you that a bipartisan delegation of the US Congress will visit Hungary amid growing pressure on Budapest to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO.
