US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the foreign ministers of India and China about this, The New York Times writes. Any nuclear explosion in space will lead to the destruction of not only American satellites, but the satellites of Beijing and New Delhi.
U.S. officials and outside experts estimate that such a scenario could lead to a global failure of communications systems, and the Earth’s orbit would be so polluted with debris that it would make it impossible for everything from Starlink to spy satellites to operate. The Kremlin doesn’t count in the United States’ view, but Blinken hopes it can listen to the leaders of China and India.
As American officials and analysts say, in this case, all global communication systems will fail. The publication notes that various American services are divided on how likely it is that the Russian president will go that far.
The White House previously announced that Russia was developing an anti-satellite program, a concern but not an immediate threat.
The anti-satellite capability has not yet been deployed, and US President Joe Biden has asked for direct diplomatic communication with Moscow on the matter, a White House official said.
Earlier, the head of the House Intelligence Committee announced classified information about the “destabilizing military capabilities” of an unnamed foreign state. ABC News, citing sources, reported that we are talking about Russia’s intentions to launch nuclear weapons into space and possible use against satellites.
