Hungary blocked the approval of the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia. The Financial Times reported this, citing unnamed official sources, on Thursday, February 15.
At a meeting of EU ambassadors yesterday, Hungary was said to be the only one not to support a new package of sanctions aimed at nearly 200 people and organizations from Russia, China and other countries believed to be helping the effort war of Moscow.
One of the officials said that Hungary did not agree to the new sanctions because of the presence of companies from China on the list.
Another official briefed on the talks described them as “a very fruitful exchange of views.” According to him, the Hungarian ambassador “asked for some time to study the content of the proposals.”
In turn, the spokesperson for the Hungarian ambassador to the EU did not respond to a request for comment.
Sources of the publication note that the discussions will continue, and the ministers of the member countries are likely to raise this issue at a meeting next week.
As you know, EU countries plan to agree on the 13th package of sanctions on February 24 – the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the United States has introduced new sanctions against Russia.
