A thousand kilometers of barriers: the Baltic countries are preparing for a Russian invasion

“Dragon’s teeth”, minefields, anti-tank ditches and barbed wire lines in addition to fortified bunkers will separate the Baltic countries and the Russian Federation from Belarus.

The Baltic countries are preparing for a possible Russian invasion and are strengthening a thousand kilometer stretch of their eastern border. This segment is the most vulnerable part of NATO’s military side. The Times reported this on Wednesday, February 14.

It is known that for these purposes, more than 1,000 fortified bunkers will be used, as well as other obstacles such as “dragon teeth”, minefields, anti-tank ditches and barbed wire lines will be created.

The fortified border would separate the Baltic countries from the Russian Federation, Belarus and the militarized Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

In particular, Estonia plans to spend about 60 million euros on the construction of 600 such defense structures on the border with Russia. Deputy Defense Minister Susan Lillevali noted that each bunker will have an area of about 37 square meters, can accommodate about 10 soldiers, and will be protected from artillery strikes.

The Estonian military is implementing the project with great intensity because of the fear of Moscow’s attack on the Baltic countries. On Tuesday, February 13, the Estonian foreign intelligence service warned in its annual report that the Russian Federation intends to double the number of troops on the borders of the three countries rather than the 19 thousand people concentrated in the region before the full measure . invasion of Ukraine.

The intelligence also describes Kremlin plans to create a new army corps, which could be based in Petrozavodsk, northeast of St. Petersburg, and conquer the border of Finland.

Lithuanian army officer and researcher at the Baltic Institute of Advanced Technologies in Vilnius Donatas Palavenis noted that the main purpose of the fortresses is to slow down the advance of the invading forces and direct them to areas where NATO can fight more acceptable terms.

“The construction of this fortified line will undoubtedly require time and resources, but its effectiveness can be seen in the war in Ukraine, where troops cannot effectively break through obstacles and capture significant territory,” said Palavenis.

He also added that since the Baltic countries do not have the depth of defense to delay the enemy, the fight will be for every centimeter of territory, which will require the creation of artificial barriers and fortifications to reduce losses. The Estonian Ministry of Defense estimates that to capture such positions, attackers would need four to seven times more men than without such fortifications.

According to the publication, the Baltic countries are especially interested in depriving Russia of the opportunity to create its own defense in any occupied territory. Experts study the war in Ukraine in detail, studying the reasons for the unsuccessful counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as the reasons that did not allow the Russian army to advance in the middle of country.

“Behind it there are all kinds of preventive measures: ditches, rows of “dragon’s teeth”, minefields. Everything works,” they assured.

Experts added that the main lesson is to find ways to stop the advance of Russian armored units, because if they are not stopped, it cannot protect the countries.

It was previously reported that the United States would permanently deploy aviation and artillery to Latvia.
