The test of the shells took place against the backdrop of deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
The DPRK announced the successful test on February 11 of a new guided projectile for the 240 mm multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) and a flight control system. The new product was developed by specialists from the North Korean National Defense Academy. Yonhap reports.
The purpose of the tests is to test the combat characteristics and assess the accuracy of the kill. Pyongyang believes that this improvement will significantly improve the firepower of the MLRS and help reassess the missile launcher’s strategic value and usefulness.
As is known, the DPRK maintains a 240-mm rocket system deployed near the South Korean border and threatens to attack Seoul in the event of war. The South Korean military has confirmed the presence of MLRS firing ranges in North Korea. They discovered the North’s missile system firing toward the Yellow Sea from an area near the western port city of Nampo. However, they did not release this information to the public because they only reported the launch of ballistic missiles or other large weapons.
It was noted that the current test took place against the backdrop of deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang and the high possibility that the new shells could be exported to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
Some South Korean experts believe that the improved 240-mm projectile may have a dual purpose. From a practical point of view, the DPRK can sell it to Russia, and from a political point of view, it can be used to put pressure on the South.
240mm ammunition can be used in the Russian Cheburashka rocket system (BM-24 developed in the 1950s), but this caliber is not standard for the Russian army. It is believed that they were made in a single copy.
Before the mass invasion, some of these MLRS were in service with the units of the so-called “1st Army Corps” of the terrorist “DPR.” In Russian propaganda, they are presented as a handicraft made in the temporarily occupied part of the Donetsk region.
The DPRK army has a full line of MLRS with 240-mm caliber, both BM-24 and modernized models under the designations M-1985, M-1989 and M-1991.
We remind you that the DPRK announced the tests of the Hwasal-2 missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
It has also been reported that Russia has launched North Korean-made ballistic missiles against Ukraine at least nine times. This is what the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN said.
