The future president of Finland supports Ukraine’s accession to the EU and has promised to actively promote this process.
Alexander Stubb from the Coalition Party won the presidential election in Finland on Sunday, February 11. Based on the results of counting all the ballots, he received 51.6% of the votes, reports Yle.
At the same time, Green Party candidate Pekka Haavisto got 48.4%.
Stubb emphasized that he was proud of the atmosphere of mutual respect in which the election was held.
According to experts, the second round is one of the most tense in the history of presidential elections in Finland. The gap between the candidates will not exceed 99 thousand votes.
Speaking to reporters, Stubb confirmed that Finland will continue to provide strong support to Ukraine.
In his opinion, for Finland security is an existential issue. At the same time, Stubb considers his country a strong member of NATO, and the Alliance itself is the strongest defense alliance in the world.
Stubb held all the top ministerial posts in Finland, including the ministries of finance and foreign affairs. Until recently, he was a professor at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and received a PhD in international relations.
Stubb previously said he did not agree that Ukraine should give up even part of its land for peace with Russia. Also, the future president of Finland supports Ukraine’s accession to the EU and has promised to actively promote this process.
