Former President Donald Trump said that during his leadership in the United States he threatened NATO countries that he would incite Russia to attack them if they did not help the alliance. This statement caused a wave of anger in the world.
So, White House spokesman Andrew Bates called Trump’s words “scary” and a threat to US national security.
“Encouraging the aggression of our closest allies by murderous regimes is abhorrent and unjustified. It endangers US national security, global stability and our economy,” Bates said.
According to the former US President, the NATO Secretary General also responded. As Jens Stoltenberg said, talk about defense alliance members not protecting each other undermines overall security. In addition, he said, such statements endanger the lives of American and European soldiers.
President of the European Council Charles Michel said that such statements only serve the interests of the Russian dictator.
“The Transatlantic Alliance has supported the security and prosperity of Americans, Canadians and Europeans for 75 years. The reckless statements about NATO’s security and Article 5 unity only serve Putin’s interests. They are not brings more security or peace to the world,” Michel wrote.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk Through Trump’s words he spoke to the country’s President Andrzej Duda.
“Mr. President, perhaps this is an excuse to convene the Cabinet Council,” Tusk turned to Duda.
“The alliance between Poland and the United States must be strong, regardless of who is in power now in Poland and in the United States. I have always acted in this way and will continue to act in this spirit, respecting all of our partners in the United States. The resentment of half of the American political scene does not serve our economic interests, nor the security of Poland,” Duda responded to Prime Minister Tusk.
Let’s remember that Trump said he would “end the war” in Ukraine even before his inauguration. He also criticized Europe for “giving Ukraine 10 times less money than the United States.”
