NATO countries must prepare for a confrontation with Russia that could last decades. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this in an interview with Welt am Sonntag, quoted by the n-tv portal on Saturday, February 10.
“NATO is not looking for war with Russia. But we have to prepare for a confrontation that could last decades,” he said.
According to Stoltenberg, if Vladimir Putin wins Ukraine, there is no guarantee that Russia’s aggression will not spread to other countries.
“Deterrence only works if it inspires confidence,” the NATO Secretary General emphasized and called on allies to continue to support Ukraine and invest in military capabilities, as Putin prepares Russia’s economy for a long war.
Stoltenberg recalled that in countries with market economies, arms manufacturers need signed contracts so they can increase production.
“This means a transition from slow production in peacetime to rapid production, as is necessary during a conflict,” concluded the general secretary.
Earlier, Stoltenberg named the path to peace in Ukraine, where Putin will understand that the continuation of the aggressive war will have too high a price.
