Israel plans to evacuate the Palestinian civilian population from the city of Rafah, where a military operation is planned.
More than a million civilians gathered in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip will be able to evacuate before the Israeli military moves in. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this on Friday, February 9, The Times of Israel reports.
Netanyahu’s announcement came amid US criticism that Israel had not done the pre-operational planning necessary to ensure civilians were not harmed and that failure to do so risked “catastrophe.”
In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said he had instructed the IDF and defense establishment to present plans for both the evacuation of Palestinian civilians from the southern Gaza Strip and the disbanding of Hamas battalions in the Rafah area: ” It is not possible to achieve the military objective of eliminating Hamas and leaving the four battalions of Rafah.”
According to Israeli authorities, it is clear that the large-scale operation in Rafah requires the evacuation of civilians from the combat zone.
More than 1.3 million Palestinians are estimated to have taken refuge in the Rafah area after the Israel Defense Forces issued an evacuation warning for northern Gaza and other areas during its ground offensive against Hamas. Unable to leave the small Palestinian territory, many live in makeshift tent cities or overcrowded UN shelters.
Let’s remember the day before, US President Joe Biden said that the actions of the IDF in Gaza were excessive.
