The Permanent Mission of Russia to international organizations in Vienna sent a note to the IAEA about minefields around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
Minefields do not pose any threat to the station personnel and the IAEA Secretariat experts located there. The presence of mines in it is due to the need to deter potential Ukrainian saboteurs, the report says.
In addition, Russian diplomats said that laying mines to protect the perimeter of nuclear power plants is “an acceptable practice that does not contradict any IAEA recommendations.”
The Russian representative office reported that such measures to protect the nuclear power plant can be taken even if the plant is located outside the combat zone, since the installation of mines does not contradict IAEA recommendations.
The Zaporizhia NPP was cleared of mines in November 2023. But now the explosive devices are again located between the inner and outer fences around the power plant.
This became known during a visit to Zaporizhia NPP by IAEA experts on January 18, the organization’s report notes.
As the agency’s general director Rafael Grossi noted, the presence of mines is incompatible with IAEA safety standards.
Grossi also warned that the Russian occupiers at the Zaporizhia NPP are unlikely to carry out a comprehensive overhaul of the plant this year.
Let us remind you that Ukrainian employees no longer have access to Zaporizhia NPP. According to the IAEA, now only employees with Russian citizenship and who have signed contracts with the Russian operator are allowed to work at the Zaporozhye NPP.
