The reason for suspicion was metal rings, but eventually it turned out that the bird was only participating in a race.

In Mumbai, India, police freed a spy pigeon after eight months in prison. The bird was found in May 2023 with two metal rings and a message said to be Chinese characters, The Guardian reported on Friday, February 2.

The police suspected that the pigeon was involved in espionage, took it into their custody, and then sent it to one of the veterinary clinics in Mumbai.

It was later learned that the pigeon was from Taiwan and participated in the open water race.

With the permission of the police, he was transferred to the Bombay Animal Welfare Society, where he was released.

The publication said this is not the first time the birds have been suspected of espionage.

In 2016, police arrested a pigeon after it was found to contain a note threatening Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2020, the police released the pigeon of a Pakistani fisherman, who was also considered a spy. He was suspected after flying over the heavily militarized border between the nuclear powers.

It was previously reported that a German city will hire a man to twist the necks of hundreds of pigeons.
