Russia has baselessly accused Ukraine of a non-existent genocide, according to the International Court of Justice.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague recognized its jurisdiction in the case of Ukraine against Russia for genocide. This was announced by the president of the court, Joan Donoghue, reported European reality on Friday, February 2.
The publication recalls that this case was initiated by Ukraine in February 2022. Then Kyiv accused Moscow of baselessly using accusations of the alleged “genocide of the people of Donbass” to justify the illegal absolute its invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine’s position is based on numerous statements by Vladimir Putin and other leaders of the Russian Federation, who since 2014, especially in February 2022, have made public statements about the alleged “genocide” on the part of Ukraine .
Today Joan Donoghue announced the dismissal of five of the six objections raised by the Russian Federation and the partial removal of the sixth objection.
At the same time, the court refused to consider the Ukrainian claims about the illegality of the recognition of the so-called “LPR” and “DPR” and the start of the war based on false accusations of genocide, because, according to court, they are not related to the Genocide Convention.
“Only Ukraine’s claim that Russia baselessly accused Ukraine of a non-existent genocide, which may violate the Genocide Convention, will continue to be considered on the merits. This will likely force the Ukrainian legal team to settle the claim as well, because the main claims are based on points that the court will not consider,” the publication wrote.
It is noted that this is not a decision on the merits, but opens the way for further consideration.
Let’s remember that on January 31, the UN Court judged Russia to be violating international law for violating the Convention on the Prohibition of the Financing of Terrorism and the Convention on the Prohibition of Racial Discrimination.
