In exchange for Hungary’s green light to help Ukraine, the bloc did not commit to allocating billions of euros in EU funds earmarked for Hungary.
The European Union decided not to unfreeze Hungarian funds in exchange for the creation of a Fund for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros. It was reported by Reuters.
It was noted that in exchange for the “green light” from Hungary to help Ukraine, “the bloc did not commit to the allocation of billions of euros from EU funds intended for Hungary, but was frozen by Brussels due to concerns about human rights and the rule of law in the country.”
According to diplomats, the transfer of 50 billion euros to Ukraine provides an annual discussion of the package and the possibility to change it after two years “if necessary.”
As you know, one of the main topics of today’s summit in Brussels is an attempt to reach an agreement on a package of financial assistance to Ukraine worth 50 billion euros over four years. The package was intercepted by Hungary.
We remind you that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has confirmed that Budapest has sent Brussels a compromise agreement on unblocking funding for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros.
