Lawmakers are blocking aid to Ukraine by demanding tighter security on the US’s southern border, where there is a massive refugee crisis.
The US national security package, which deals with aid to Ukraine and border security, is likely to be split into two separate documents. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, announced this on Wednesday, January 31, The Hill wrote.
“The United States may take such a step because of concerns about border policy reforms,” the newspaper said.
At the same time, the source of the publication said that the final decision will depend on the text of the document about the border, which will soon appear following the negotiations in the Senate.
The remarks came as Johnson and other GOP officials indicated that the Senate deal combining aid to Ukraine with changes to immigration and border policies would be “dead on the floor,” said The Hill.
One of the main provisions of the disputed agreement concerns the power of the executive branch to stop migration if the number of illegal connections exceeds 5,000 per day. They believe that this threshold is too high.
“Notably, while House Republicans are increasingly opposed to increasing aid to Ukraine, European allies have expressed confidence that Johnson and the majority of Congress support continued support,” the newspaper added.
As a reminder, White House National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby said that the Ukrainian air defense forces were forced to conserve missiles in the missile attack on Tuesday, January 23, because there is still uncertainty about the next deliveries of Americans.
