The corresponding decision was made on January 31 at a meeting of the Swiss Federal Council. This will be Zurich’s response to Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Swiss government.
The Federal Council thereby joins the European Union, which adopted the 12th package of sanctions in December 2023,” the statement said.
The new measures against Russia will come into force on February 1. Earlier on December 21, Switzerland added 147 individuals and legal entities to its sanctions lists.
As you know, on December 18, 2023, the Council of the European Union approved the 12th package of restrictive measures against Russia. The sanctions package included a ban on the import (direct or indirect) of Russian diamonds. This applies to raw materials of both Russian origin (including those processed in third countries) and those exported from Russia or in transit.
Let us remind you that on January 19 it became known that the European Union began discussing a new package of sanctions, which it plans to approve by February 24 – the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Potential measures could include new lists, more trade restrictions and combating Moscow’s ongoing attempts to circumvent the bloc’s sanctions through both third countries and companies within the EU.
