Five European leaders are demanding that EU member states increase military support for Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the prime ministers of Denmark, the Czech Republic, Estonia and the Netherlands – Matte Frederiksen, Petr Fiala, Kaja Kallas and Mark Rutte – wrote a joint letter calling for increased support for Ukraine. The Financial Times reported this on Wednesday, January 31.
European politicians say Ukraine’s will to fight remains unshaken, but the country does not have enough artillery ammunition and promises of military support from partners “risk not meeting the needs of Ukraine.”
Early last year, the European Union pledged to supply Ukraine with one million artillery shells by the end of March 2024, but fell short of that target.
“But we cannot simply abandon our commitment. If Ukrainian soldiers continue the fight, the need for ammunition will be extreme. And the arms and ammunition supplies of EU members to Ukraine are more important than before,” the letter said.
EU leaders called for renewed resolve and redoubled efforts to ensure that support for Ukraine lasts as long as necessary. The provision of ammunition and weapons systems, including howitzers, tanks, drones and air defense systems, is essential.
“Our ability to continue to support the defense of Ukraine, both in winter and in the long term, is decisive. Indeed, it is a matter of our common European security, and for the brave military personnel of Ukraine, a matter of life and death,” the EU leaders stressed.
We remind you that earlier the media found out how many bullets the EU will give to Ukraine on March 1.
Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that if Ukraine does not receive the required number of artillery shells from one place, it will work to ensure their supply from other sources.
