However, this will be subject to an annual vote on continued funding. If Brussels guarantees that it will vote on this issue every year, then Budapest will support it. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated this in an interview with Le Point.
We decided to make a compromise proposal: okay, we do not agree with the amendments to the budget. We do not agree that we should give 50 billion euros, which is a huge amount. We do not agree that we should give them for four years and so on. But so be it, Hungary is ready to participate in the twenty-seven decision if they guarantee that every year we will decide whether we will continue to send this money or not,” he noted.
At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister emphasized that the annual decision to extend assistance to Ukraine must be unanimous. He also complained that his demand was being interpreted by some EU member states as an attempt at blackmail.
As you know, at the summit of EU leaders, Hungary blocked the decision to allocate 50 billion euros to Ukraine for 2024-2027.
Let us remind you that Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal said that all 27 members of the European Union had previously agreed to support a new four-year program to support Ukraine worth 50 billion euros. The EU is expected to approve it during a summit on February 1.
