US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed on Monday, January 29, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg the critical need to rapidly increase defense production for Ukraine’s needs. The Pentagon reported this following the meeting.
“Each noted the criticality of rapidly increasing defense production to extend support to Ukraine, replace Alliance munitions and equipment, and meet the increased requirements of the defense plans adopted at the Vilnius Summit ,” the statement said.
Discussing the situation around Ukraine, they also emphasized the importance of maintaining NATO unity and continued support for the Alliance.
The head of the Pentagon and the Secretary General of NATO also exchanged views on the security situation in the Middle East, in particular, expressing anger and sadness at the death and injuries of American troops in Jordan.
Austin and Stoltenberg reaffirmed their support for Sweden’s application for NATO membership and expressed hope that Hungary would complete the ratification process.
It was previously reported that France could supply the Ukrainian army with 3,000 155-mm shells every month. France also plans to produce 78 Caesar self-propelled wheeled artillery units for Ukraine. Six of them will be handed over to Ukrainian troops in the near future.
