Politicians discussed issues important to the Hungarian minority. They agreed to work to resolve controversial issues and advance bilateral relations between the countries.
The head of the Presidential Office Andriy Ermak, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and his Hungarian colleague Peter Szijjártó held a meeting with the leaders of the Hungarian community of Transcarpathia and representatives of the churches on Monday, January 29 in Uzhgorod . It is reported by the Office of the President.
Ermak thanked the representatives of the Hungarian community for the meeting and joint efforts towards victory against the Russian aggressor.
“It is very important that Hungary unconditionally supports our independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. There are questions, but about this terrible war they cannot be resolved. We agreed that we will not give anyone, especially the our enemies, of the opportunity to think that friendly neighbors have countries with a very good history, there are issues that can be used today against us and against Hungary,” added the head of the Office of the President.
He emphasized that the Ukrainian and Hungarian sides have already started preparing for a meeting between President Vladimir Zelensky and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
“There are deadlines for the commission, which exist at the level of foreign ministers: ten days to resolve all the issues raised today. And within ten days we will have an understanding of what and how quickly the decision will be to continue opening a new page in our relationship,” said Ermak.
In this regard, Szijjártó said that before today he had never met the representatives of the Hungarian community living in Ukraine, so he considered this meeting as a very positive sign.
“I want to thank all of you that for the past nine years the voice of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia and Ukraine has been heard by everyone,” said the minister, who separately expressed gratitude to those working in educational institutions.
He noted that Ukraine and Hungary are working to establish good neighborly relations: “We must recognize that the leadership of Ukraine took a very important step in December 2023. It was difficult to achieve this, but we really appreciate it.”
In particular, Szijjártó said that in cooperation with the Hungarian community, 11 points were developed, among other things, on the use of the language of the national minority in all areas of life, the restoration of the status of the national school and the possibility of taking matriculation exams in the Hungarian language. These issues were transferred to representatives of Ukraine and in ten days will be discussed at the Ukrainian-Hungarian intergovernmental level.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, for his part, called the processes taking place today in our country as a change in the philosophy of the state in relation to national communities. As an example, he cited the adoption of relevant legislation and the willingness to cooperate with the Hungarian government on outstanding issues. Kuleba also noted the president’s submission to the Verkhovna Rada of a bill on multiple citizenship. He expressed the conviction that all living in Ukraine should jointly protect, develop, respect and value it.
The Deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council from the regional organization “KMKS” – the Party of Hungarians of Ukraine Judita Petei, for her part, noted that the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary in Transcarpathia was a historic event , because the Hungarian community is heard.
He thanked Andriy Ermak, Dmitry Kuleba and the head of the Transcarpathian OVA, Viktor Mikita, for understanding the needs of the Hungarian national minority in the region. “I want to thank you for the changes in the law on national minorities, for funding, for all educational and medical support programs,” said Petei.
“You can count on us, because we are equal citizens of Ukraine, law-abiding, honest, honest. We are here and here. And you can count on us,” he concluded.
