The Russian official said that the Russian Federation is ready to improve the breakdown of relations between Moldova and Transnistria “as a mediator and guarantor” in the settlement.
Kremlin officials and propagandists are setting information conditions to weaken Moldova in order to prevent Moldova’s integration with the EU and the West. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
As is known, the director of the Second Department of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexey Polishchuk, said in an interview with TASS published on January 28 that Moldova began to “destroy the its relations” with the CIS member states and the Russian-led CIS organization as a whole, and There are also rumors that Moldova plans to leave the CIS before the end of 2024.
According to him, this decision will not benefit any of the interests or citizens of Moldova, and will also disadvantage the Moldovan economy. Polishchuk also said that the settlement of the Transnistrian issue with Moldova is in a “deep crisis” and that Moldova’s economic pressure on Transnistria since the beginning of 2024 has “more than interfered” with any solution. Polishchuk said that the Russian Federation is ready to improve the breakdown of relations between Moldova and Transnistria “as a mediator and guarantor” in the settlement.
Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian said on January 28 that Moldova will not return to the negotiation process with Transnistria in the 5+2 format until Russian-Ukrainian relations improve and Russia’s war in Ukraine continues.
The Russian Federation, in particular, has accused Ukraine of abandoning the Minsk agreements that largely halted the conflict following Russia’s 2014 invasion ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and Russia may be setting of information conditions to make similar claims against Moldova.
In the past, ISW assessed that the Kremlin is likely creating information conditions to justify Russia’s upcoming invasion of Moldova under the guise of protecting “its compatriots abroad” and the “world of Russia.”
Russia may try to justify its efforts to invade or destabilize Moldova by arguing that the people of Transnistria are at risk because of Moldova’s alleged rejection of the Transnistrian settlement process.
ISW analysts speculate that the Kremlin may be switching to rhetorical narratives that appeal to a wider audience outside the “Russian world.”
We remind you that Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that her country is trying to protect itself from the risks of destabilization from Russia, but weaknesses still remain.
It was previously reported that Moldova intends to modernize its air defense system to protect against Russia.
