Gennady Burbulis, a former secretary of state and former representative of the prime minister of the Russian government, a close associate of the first president of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin, has died in Baku, Azerbaijani news portal Turan reported citing sources on Sunday, June 19.

Later, this information was confirmed to the Interfax news agency by Burbulis press secretary Andrey Markov, and added that the death of the former Russian Secretary of State was unexpected.

According to the Turan portal, 76-year-old Burbulis died in one of the hotels in the Azerbaijani capital, where he came to participate in the IX Global Baku Forum.

In 1991-1992, Gennady Burbulis was the first deputy chairman of the RSFSR government. He participated in the signing of the Belovezhskaya Accords.

From 1993 to 1999, Burbulis was a representative of the State Duma of the Russian Federation of the 1st and 2nd convocations, in 2000-2001 he was deputy governor of the Novgorod region, from 2001 to 2007 he represented this region in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.

In 2011 – 2014, Gennady Burbulis was Vice -Rector of Moscow International University.

In an interview with Gordon Boulevard in 2017, Burbulis said Crimea would return to Ukrainian control.
