In the summer and autumn of 2024, construction of four new nuclear reactors may begin, which will be built at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant. Thus, Ukraine wants to compensate for the lost energy capacity due to the war with the Russian Federation, including the occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. This was stated by Energy Minister German Galushchenko, Reuters reported.
It is noted that two power units will be built using Russian-made equipment, which Ukraine wants to import from Bulgaria. Two more reactors will be built using Western technologies from energy equipment manufacturer Westinghouse.
As is known, the construction of the third and fourth power units of the KhNPP began in the 1980s, but the project was subsequently frozen. Since 1991, Ukraine has built three new nuclear reactors – one each in Zaporozhye, Khmelnitsky and Rivne nuclear power plants.
Today, nuclear power plants in Ukraine produce more than 55% of the country’s electricity needs, but the authorities want to compensate for the loss of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is controlled by the occupiers.
Let us recall that on January 20, IAEA experts stated that Russian invaders again installed mines on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. And earlier, the Russian occupiers did not allow these experts into the reactor halls of power units No. 1, 2 and 6 and into some parts of the turbine halls of Zaporozhye NPP for several weeks.
